George Worker, Jess Watkin claim top CD awards

Manawatu batsman George Worker has been named the Central Districts player of the season for the second year in a row. Worker took the player-of-the-season award and was named the one-day player of the summer at the CD awards ceremony in Napier on Sunday. The 27-year-old was the top scorer in the one-day competition, where CD were beaten finalists, with 659 runs and he also took 12 wickets. He also scored 240 runs in the Twenty20 competition and 395 runs in five Plunket Shield matches, even though he only played five four-day games.

Taranaki batsman Tom Bruce also had a good night at the awards, being named Super Smash Twenty20 player of the year and players' player of the year. Bruce, who debuted for the Black Caps this season, scored 283 runs in the Twenty20 competition.

The Plunket Shield's top wicket taker, left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel, was named the four-day player of the year. Patel took 44 wickets in the Plunket Shield, the second year in a row he's been the top wicket taker, having taken 43 last season.

There was also a special award given to Nelson spin bowler Marty Kain, who is retiring and shifting to the United States with his new wife.

Wanganui all-rounder Jess Watkin, 18, was named the women's player of the year and bowler of the year.
